3 Things to Expect From Your First Therapeutic Massage

If you’ve never had a therapeutic massage before, you’re not alone. Many of my clients come in feeling curious, a little unsure, or wondering what the session will actually feel like. My goal is to make your first visit feel comfortable, supportive, and centered around you.

Here’s what you can expect when you come in for your first therapeutic massage with me.

We Start With a Conversation

Your session begins with a conversation—not hands-on work.

Before we ever get to the table, I’ll ask you about:

  • Where you’re feeling tension, pain, or discomfort

  • Any injuries, surgeries, or medical concerns

  • How stress shows up in your body

  • What you’re hoping to get out of the session

This helps me understand your body and what it needs that day. There’s no pressure to have the “right” answers—this is simply a space to check in and be heard.

Getting Settled on the Table

Once we move into the treatment room, I’ll step out so you can get comfortable. You’ll undress to your own comfort level and relax under a sheet or blanket. I only uncover the area I’m working on, and your privacy is always respected.

If at any point something doesn’t feel right—the pressure, the temperature, or even the way you’re positioned—please let me know. This session is a partnership, and your comfort guides everything I do.

During the Massage: Intentional, Therapeutic Work

Therapeutic massage is different from a relaxation massage. While many people do feel calm and grounded during the session, my focus is on addressing specific areas of tension and imbalance.

You may notice:

  • Slow, intentional movements

  • Focused work on tight or overworked muscles

  • Deeper pressure in certain areas (always adjustable)

Some spots may feel tender, especially if you’ve been holding tension for a long time. That’s very normal, and I’ll always work within a range that feels safe and supportive for you.

I also use high-quality massage oils made with natural ingredients to help muscles soften and allow for smoother, more effective work.

After Your Session: What You Might Feel

After your massage, many clients tell me they feel:

  • More relaxed and grounded

  • Looser through areas that felt tight before

  • Calm, quiet, or even a little sleepy

It’s also possible to feel mild soreness the next day—similar to how you might feel after stretching or using muscles in a new way. Drinking water and moving gently can help your body process the work.

I may also share simple recommendations, like stretches or self-care tips, to help you get the most out of your session.

Your First Session Is Just the Start

One massage can bring noticeable relief, but therapeutic massage often works best when it’s part of ongoing care. Your first session helps me learn how your body responds, so future visits can be even more personalized and effective.

Whether you’re dealing with stress, chronic tension, or simply want to feel more at ease in your body, your first therapeutic massage is a meaningful step toward feeling better—and I’m honored to be part of that process ☺
